Mini album review: Niveau Zero - Jasmine

Niveau Zero's not someone I've reviewed before, but I've heard tunes from him in passing, mostly what seems to be termed 'filthstep' on youtube, which is bollocks, its just metal influenced dubstep, and doesn't need a 'label'

Anyway Jasmine by Niveau Zero has to be one of the only dubstep albums I've found myself able to listen to all the way through without becoming a bit bored. Its got some real heavy riffs that wouldn't sound out of place in a black metal song, but then some really uplifting mellow tunes on it too. To say its a really well produced album would be an understand, easily one of my favourites this year too, even the album artwork is cool.

It comes with 7 of his own tunes, and 2 remixes, so its definately not a long album, but if you like it you'll really like it, if not you really won't like it, I don't think there's any middle ground on this one.

Favourite tunes have to be 'The cross (ft Aucan)', complete with American Psycho quotes, middle of the road dubstep beat, but amazing uplifting samples, this is one I reckon will be appearing in a mix soon (I'm determined to actually make the next mix good).

Distorted rules (Niveau Zero Remix). Death metal couple with worb worbs, all about the furious drums and screaming in this one.....

This release is out on ad noiseam, priced at 9 euros (adn161)

Mini Album review: Death Grips - No Love Deep Web

It seems like Death Grips have been churning out material at the rate of knots, no complaints from me as they're one of my favourite emerging artists over the last couple of years.

Their latest offering 'No Love Deep Web' is a free download of their website, and comes complete with a photo of a cock (as in an actual erect penis) as the front cover. One the first listen, I really struggled with this album, it was one of those I couldn't decide whether it was genius, or they'd just gone mental. The album has that real death grips 'sound' to it, but over the 3 albums I've heard the production quality has changed beyond belief. Im now on my 4th or 5th listen, and I have to say its well on its way to getting into my top 5 spot for favourite albums at the end of this year now. Some of the tunes are exceptionally discordant to the point I literally couldn't work out the beat to start off with, but this chaos couple with some forward thinking ideas and proper death grips brutality really makes this album into a nicely rounded one.

Stand out tracks for me have to be:

Black Dice: I particularly like the driving bass contrasting the highs in this tune, something that death grips do repeatedly well.

And: Bass rattles stars out the sky - Again contrasting bass and highs working well, but a dream beat and samples that really give a feeling of panic to the tune..... Banging!

You can download the album for free at the death grips home page http://thirdworlds.net/

Scraps from the internet: Veolia's wildlife Photographer of the year winners

Just a quick post to put up this link I found of the Veolia Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition winners at the BBC. Some truly stunning shots in this gallery. Im hoping to get up and see the exhibition at the Natural History museum next weekend and will report back.

BBC link

Scraps from the internet: Photos of a Jewish ghetto taken by Hitler's photographer.

These striking images have been posted up on U75, from the Daily Mail website. As I totally refuse to post a link to the Daily Mail, I've posted the link to the original Life magazine link.

These colour photos were taken by Hugo Jaeger, Hitlers personal photographer who normally spent his time glorifying the Fuhrer, however in these images he seems to have taken an interest in the prisoners in this Jewish ghetto.

Scraps from the internet: The unseen Gulf War

Another link post about Photography on urban75 again today entitled 'The unseen Gulf war'. To put it bluntly these are images that you wouldn't really see in the papers, but certainly important and overlooked in exposing the true horrors of war.

Thanks to weltweit on u75.

So on a photo thread on urban75 today a couple of photography posts were made, not the most lighthearted of photographic projects, however this type of work is the reason I became interested in photography in the first place.

Warning: Disturbing images

Thanks to weltweit on u75 for the post.

Hardstep drum and bass mix 2

New mix, similar to the last, with a few new tunes, and a bit better mixing. Managed to cock up the filters and switch the beatmasher on, so I need to work out what I did wrong.

Waxham Beach Party 2012: The playlist

So I just got back the VloodyCloody beach party at Waxham, and I have to say despite burning my hand and falling in a ditch filled with my own piss I had a fantastic time. I took the Boombox along that I wrote up earlier in this blog and it was perfect for the beach as it doesn't have any moving parts for the sand to mess up. I did get asked a bit about the music I was playing by quite a few people, so though it easier just to write the whole lot up here and share the link.

Albums

Ceephax Acid Crew - United acid emirates

Ceephax acid crew

This is the album I was asked about the most "y'know the one that sounds like computer game album". Whilst not a new album, its a great album and well worth looking up. I think VVT and elfskin asked about this one.

Red box recorder - Colour Codes

Red Box recorder homepage

Album available for free at aeroplane records

I love this album, its really well written and I'd happily pay an full album price for it, but luckily its a totally free download. VVT asked about this.

Clark - Totems flare

Clark/Warp Homepage

Whilst not the most up to date clark album, its definitely my favourite. VVT asked about this.

Clark - Iradelphic

Clark/Warp Homepage

Clarks most up to date album, I think I played the second half of this, as it has all three parts of the pining, and thats my favourite part of this album. VVT asked about this.

High Rankin & Tigerlight - Stepping on the devils tail

Bouncy Bouncy dubstep, with apparently mental lyrics as pointed out by laz and socket, which I'd not realised before. Laz asked about this one particularly.

Slagsmålsklubben - Den svenske disco

Another electronic computer gamey sound I like, I was asked about this lot, but can't remember who by

Crystal Castles - (II)

One of my favourite 'bit' bands, the second album of theirs is much more chilled out than the first, but its still beautifully presented.

Mixes

Tykal - Classicore part 2

This is a mix I downloaded off the internet which brings together breakcore tunes that are classically inspired. Unfortunately its a bit of a bugger to get hold of now, but I did find info about it again on the Mix of the day blog.

Squire of gothos & Spongebob squarewave - Live on tinnitus

Put out on brain damage radio I played the first half of this which is a bassline mix, but then was asked to turn the spongebob squarewave second half breakcore off as it was a bit hectic. Unfortunately brain damage radio site seems to be down these days, so no link :(

Fotza - Live at bang face weekender 2011

Unfortunately the box ran out of battery just as we were starting to get into this, but fotza's mixes are great, and he can be found frequenting the ravetalk forums. The set is available for free download on soundcloud.

Other bits and pieces

I also played one of the urburn playlists I've made for the CD swap on Urban75, except the first tune as its been called offensive before.

Ive tried to make it into a spottily but only 4 of the tracks are available, hence I don't use spotify day to day. Urburn 16 on spottily

Individual tunes

Adele (Jamie XX shuffle) - Rolling in the deep

One of my favourite Jamie XX remixes, nice bass and great lyrics from Adele. No-one asked about this, I just noticed lots of people singing along.

Goodbooks vs Crystal Castles - Leni

By far my favourite crystal castles remixes, I even had it in the previous post on this blog look!

I think thats all the main things I played, there may well have been others, but I'll be damned if I remember them.

Wonky Donkey Mix#2 - Balls Deep Mix

So a new mix of some of my filthiest tunes, I really like working with this type of music when I'm mixing, maybe I just like it fast.....

Anyway, 1 main cock up I think, still need to work on me levels a bit, but I aint unhappy with it all.

Song discovery: Leni (crystal castles remix) - Goodbooks

So whilst thinking of things that could go on the blog, I realised I download huge amounts of individual songs to my iPhone, from all sorts of weird and wonderful artists, but these songs are new to me. So I'm planning on posting some of them here when I find them. They aren't all going to be brand new songs, just great songs that could easily get looked over.

Yesterday I discovered this whilst flicking through crystal castles track. I listened to the original Goodbooks version and wasn't impressed, but the Crystal Castles remix is great (I'm a big fan of bit stuff in general, the Crystal Castles are one of my favourites, as they still have a morbid undertone to them).

WonkyDonkey mix #1

So I've finally got my new mac, so watch out for some mixes on here (probably quite a few whilst I'm learning).

Anyway, here's my first dubstep and drum step mixes with some of my favourite tunes on. Of course Im still learning, so there's a few balls ups, but overall I'm reasonably happy with it :)

Mini Album review: Ruby my dear - Remains of shapes to come

Well this is an album I've been waiting for, having loved two of Ruby my dear's previous EP's (gingko and the dreaming tree), I've been frothing at the mouth for this album, only made worse by the fact the release date seems to have been pushed back a couple of times too.

Ruby my dear is someone who manages to make music the switches between beautiful melody to head trashing breakcore drums effortlessly, and this album is no exception. I will admit it has taken me a couple of listens to get into the flow of this album, but now its got me hooked, im totally in it. One thing that really caught my attention was the introduction of some 'bang bang bang' techno style beats, which is not something I'd heard on the EP's, and its definately a benefit to this album.

Standout songs have to be 'Karoshi': A very well written, reasonably chilled breakcore tune, that still keeps you on the edge of your seat. I particularly like the 'twangy' sounds, which I get the impression are an eastern string instrument (maybe a sitar?)

Secondly the tune on the album that follows karoshi called 'Uken' which uses samples from 'They call it murder' by Damien Marley, this manages to somehow retain the reggae feel of the original whilst sound like someone's having lots of fun with drum programming in the background.

The third tune is called 'A monks dream', the drum beats in this remind me of what is still my favourite Ruby my dear tune (7C0 on the EP Gingko), but monks dream as some nice boom boom boom elements, whilst remaining complex and driving at the same time.

Overall I have to say I love this album, and imagine it will be on my car stereo for a very long time. I'd recomend it to any breakcore fan and add that it was well worth the wait. Definately give this album a listen, its available to order on Adnoiseam with plenty of tunes to preview.

For more info about ruby my dear, here's his myspace and his soundcloud, he also seems to be quite active on facebook too so you can check him out there aswell

Interesting Film: A future fugitive

I wanted to post a documentary called 'A pciture of London' but unfortunately youtube wont let me link to it from here. So here's a small film called 'A fugitive futurist' by Gaston Quiribet in 1924, it depicts a future ideal for London in black and white film, and I found some of their ideas hugely fascinating. Its only 11 mins, well worth a watch if you ask me.

Documentary: Around the world in a Zeppelin

I saw this on BBC 4 the other day and found it extremely interesting. In the 30's the Graf Zeppelin was the first machine to circumnavigate the globe by air, with one woman on board, and many many men.

Anyway, thoroughly interesting BBC documentary, narrated in the words of Grace Hay, the only female on board.

Mini album review: Squarepusher - Ufabulum

Squarepusher is a bit of an oddity for me, the stuff he makes and I like, I really like, and the tunes he makes that I don't like, I really don't like them

As far as I know squarepushers been on a bit of a hiatus, last stuff I heard come from his way was the shobaleader one project in which he played bass, I bought that album, liked it enough, but I haven't listened to it much since.

However I'd heard talk of an EP, and then all of a sudden his new album ufabulum was out, and I was downloading it off itunes. Now when I write these, I like to make sure I've listened to most of the album 4 or 5 times, unfortunately I haven't had so much of a chance to do this, but I have listened to it through.

Again with all squarepusher albums, there's tunes I love and tunes I haven't liked really at all. Its certainly safe to say I'm addicted to the first 2 tracks, 4001 and unreal square.

(sorry, only live available)

The next tune is stadium ice, and this is one of the ones that really I dont like, it sounds like an IDM take on an 80's porn soundtrack. Luckily the album lifts for the rest of it will provide you with some wonderfully squarepusher sounds.

I'd really recomend this album, its not too heavy, and the squarepusher sound has developed really nicely taking some influence from the shobaleader one album in my opinion.

Music Documentary - Beats of the Heart (1977)

So I've just finished watching beats of the heart, and thoroughly enjoyed it. A 1977 documentary about Reggae, which is a little date, but still a very interesting watch, Joe Higgs, Bob Marley and Inner circle are in it, and it gives an interesting insight to the history of specifically jamaican reggae and the culture.

Music Documentary: Fela Kuti - Music is the weapon

So following from last tuesdays, I've started looking up music documentaries to watch when I'm at work, and managed to find some right gems again with the help of posters from urban75.

Fela Kuti is a name I've know of, but didn't know a huge amount about his music, I know that he did afrobeat / african style music, but that was about it. Well this documentary was a bit of an eye opener, musician, outspoken on politics and a human rights activist. Seems to have some great tunes too..... Definately one I'll be looking up

Album Review: Death Grips - The Money Store

Death Grips are a bit of a wildcard as far as my choices in music go, aggy heavy rap, over the top of some real dark industrial beats, not normally something I'd probably go for (I like my slightly older laid back hip hop, the paharcye, MF Doom etc), but Death Grips really caught my attention.

I first heard about them on the Ravetalk forum for suggestions for the Bangface weekender, off the back of which I decided to give their first offering 'ex-military' a try. I like the fact that they had a real moody side, but seemed to be trying new things in a uniquely lo-fi fashion.

In their new album 'The money store', they seemed to have amped up the production values a little, but still kept that heavy duty sound in the back ground, and although I will say the lyrics I dont find amazingly inspiring (I don't think they have any intention of being in all honesty), the backing tracks and vocals together work really well. They've got some great samples in their tunes, and the album keeps me entertained from start to finish, which 'ex-military' didn't quite manage to do.

Standout tracks for me have to be 'Hustle Bones', and 'The Cage'

If you like these tracks, seriously have a listen to the album, it will probably tick some boxes for you. I'm really hoping to catch this lot on some live dates soon, I reckon their live show has the potential to be awesome!

You can find the Death Grips website here

Album review: Bong RA - Monolith

So a couple of weeks ago I spoke about the new electronic explortions podcast by Bong Ra, which is linked here.

Over the weekend my copy of Bong Ra's new album turned up, it had taken a little while longer than I hoped as it had to come from Germany.

Bong Ra's someone who I've seen DJ a lot, but never really gone digging around into tracks he's actually made until the last 4 or 5 months. In all honesty, he's right up my street, a dark ethos, with some real industrial/metal infused sounds.

The new album is no exception, and probably goes more crossover than other stuff I've heard released under the Bong Ra name (there's some crossover side projects with other musicians he's done, i.e. wormskull).

To be completely clear about this, I fucking love this album. Its only 8 tracks and is split into 2, alpha and omega.

Alpha is 4 tracks that contain lyrics from the rapper/producer Sole (Co-founder of the record label Anticon). Sole's lyrics really suit bong ra's tunes, down beat but well written and planned out, I think over all I prefer this part of the album more (Alpha), the stand out track for me has to be Pandora's Box which is a brilliant tune.

Moving on to the second part of the album (Omega), these are more straightforward techy death jungle/tekno/dubstep speed tunes, and fuck me do the pack a punch....... Personally I feel the alpha tunes more, but I also love the omega tunes, I'd just rather listen to them mixed together. Standout tune in omega for me has to be 'Darkness | Artificial flesh'.

In all honesty, if you like this kind of music, buy this album, if your unsure, listen to the podcast, as pretty much all of the tunes are on there, then consider buying it if you like it. It comes highly recomended from th wonky donkey.

Bong-Ra's website can be found here, and the album can be bought  here.

Dub Echoes: Dub documentary

I've literally just finished watching a dub documentary called 'Dub Echoes'. Unfortunately its not great quality on youtube, but has lots of points of interest about dub music, and at 1hr 22mins will certainly kill some time.

Highly recomended for Dub fans. *Please note, im talking about dub music, not dubstep, I dont want any whinging that you've sat through it expecting a documentary about skrillex, ta.

Festivals Britannia

Following up from the last post I decided to have a dig around for the festivals britannia film, which was a really interesting documentary about UK festivals over the years. Unfortunately I've only found it in parts, but if you've got a patience its well worth a watch..

Ill keep on posting music documentaries as I watch them.......... maybe another today, I'm just watching it now.

Reggae Britannia - Music Documentary

If anyone missed it the BBC did a brilliant series of music documentaries a while back, off the top of my head I remember one about reggae, one about festivals and one about folk but I'm sure theres more.

Anyway whilst channel flicking the other day I came across reggae britannia on again, googled in and found it on youtube.

So this is a highly recomended documentary for anyone interested in reggae music. Ill try and post more music documentaries as I find them.

There's also a live show from the Barbican filmed to go with this which Ive put in too.

So the plan is to eventually create some wonky donkey mixes for the blog, but im still learning to mix, getting there slowly but its taking time.

So I to knock together a 10 min wonky taster mix, its a dubstep mix, but fear not, future ones will be all encompassing on genres.

A weekend with the Juggalo's

So I came across this video on Urban75, for those who arent aware of the 'Insane Clown Posse' they're some kind of rap rock group from the states who basically spout stuff that means nothing and wear facepaint. As you can probably tell, I'm not a fan, its simply not my cup of tea, however this little video about their fans and their festival I did find quite interesting. The festivals basically consists of painting your face, drinking warm booze, doing drugs and playing with explosives. My favourite has to be the guy who claims he can cook 'Yeah I can make like fucking steak and cheese and fucking hotdogs, and fucking fries and fucking shit', but his Piece D'resistance must be the logic of 'Getting a skinny bitch, so I can fatten her up, and then we can lose weight together, to bond.' I've never heard a more sound logic than that, and I know some right mentallers, I seriously hope they give that guy a cookery show of his own!! Anyway, they feel unified, good on them!!

Bong-Ra: Electronic Explorations mix

So for those of you who like your electronic music downright filthy, if you haven't listened to Bong-Ra, then put simply you haven't lived.

The Electronic Explorations podcasts are run by a dude called Rob Booth, and they showcase different talent in the genre. This is the second Bong-Ra mix I've heard for electronic explorations, and its a full on faceripper. I love it.

You can look up electronic explorations right here, I love them!

Review: Die Antwoord - 'Ten$ion'

If you've not come across Die Antwoord before, you could be in for a shock. They're a pisstake rap group with a dark sinister twist from south africa, and I love them (especially Yo-Landi Fasser), their style is really a mix of zef, rap and rave. Ten$ion is Die Antwoords second album, previously having release $o$ as their debut. Ten$ion moves uses the rave background tracks a lot more than $o$ does, and I think its a stronger album for it. The first tune I think worth mentioning on Ten$ion has to be 'I fink u freeky' (yeah, dont be expecting clever and profound lyrics from Die Antwoord, its not happening), which I think has a awesome 90's feel backing track on it, prime for punching the air along to.

The next track, and probably my favourite on this album has to be 'Baby's on fire', its got some keyboard synths that when played a bit too loud will give you tinnitus for a while, and again some simplistic lyrics, but as ever with Die Antwoord, shout the words along in time, and you'll love it.

If Die Antwoord play London anytime soon, I will definately be going to see them.

From Prague with love.

Just got back from Prague, and have to say I had a lovely few days of it. I'm not going to rabble on, but just wanted to mention some of my highlights, and post a few pictures.

Pros: The architecture is stunning, the beer is good, it seems like a very creative city, transport is cheap, and after a little bit of convincing my close friend convinced me to go to a blacklight theatre (which surprisingly I enjoyed). I also thoroughly enjoyed the modern art museum (Kampa Museum) and musing through tit tat shops looking for small communist trophies to add to my collection.

Cons: The tourists will get on your nerves, especially the groups of young british males on stag do's (to be fair though I didn't see too many), the obviousness in which they try to take the piss with money in the more touristy areas, the czechs seem a little grumpy at first (although the people running the bar in our hotel were great). I will mention that I think you could end up in some quite dodgy areas if you wander off the beaten track, in the park by the main train station there were a couple of people IV'ing openly, but in the interests of balance I can also say I've seen that in London, Barcelona and Krakow, but its quite obvious that they have issues with drug abuse and poverty in the Czech republic.

In short, I'd recomend it to anyone for a short break, there's plenty to see and plenty to do, just be aware that the food isn't brilliant.

Slideshow of my pics from the 5 days below.

Reviews: Clark - 'Iradelphic', The destroyers - 'Hole in the universe'

So just to be clear, I havent had massive chances to listen to both of these albums, but certainly heard enough to form some kind of opinion of them.

Ill start with Iradelphic by Clark. I'd been kept waiting in suspense for this album for a while now, and I knew it was going to have a slightly more mature finished sound to it, but wasn't sure if that was going to be a good thing or not.

At first I have to say I wasn't that stoked, but the album is certainly a grower, and I think it will be one that I listen to for a long time, instead of just loving it hard for a short period of time, and then forgetting all about it.

Most of the tunes are well programmed instrumentals, using a massive variety of diverse sounds. I have to be honest, it doesn't feel like much happens until the 3 pining tracks (numbers 9,10,11) which as far as I'm concerned are absolutely brilliant.

What I would say about this album, is dont listen to it expect it to make you jump up and down with excitement, it wont at first, but the more you listen to more you notice, if you're a fan of electronica, you could certainly do a lot worse than adding this into your collection, but its not a 'dance' album.

Secondly I'm going to move onto The Destroyers (the opposite end of the musical spectrum). After discovering The Destroyers 2 years ago at Shambala, I've loved them and their unique blend of folksy klezmer mashup brought together by something like twelve instramentalists and one nutty irish singer who tells you obscure tales of woe over the music.

I really loved their first album, it was an interesting mix of ideas and certainly caught my imagination, the new album 'Hole in the universe' stays faithful to the style they developed in the first ('Out of Babel'), but adds new elements to it, a first for them is the inclusion of some electric guitar sounds and a female opera singer.

My favourite track on the album is probably 'Red Tape' which talks about some of the difficulties of getting things done in todays political climate, but start to finish this album is a jump up klezmer smash up, and certainly will be bring me musical joy for a while now. If you haven't The Destroyers, go seem them live, they'll be brilliant fun even if the music isn't to your taste. Is the music is to your taste, buy the albums, they're brilliant!

A few more bits of me attempting graphic design

Just chucked these together, thinking about making the 2 that isn't a picture of a bird in t-shirts (im assuming no-one wants a dead bird on their t-shirts).

The Garden Gnomes sessions

I completely by chance have just stumbled across this page, and was amazed to see 2 freinds up on there doing acoustic sets.

First of we have Oliver Sudden, who I was at college with

And then Breezy Lee who I know from my yoot when I was the shittest skater in the world (skater boys couldnt keep up with me on water though)

Hope you enjoy :)
